Kurt Zehntner started Renata in 1952 to make parts for mechanical watches. In 1974, the company started making coin or button cells as well. SMH Swiss Corporation for Microelectronics and Watchmaking Industries Ltd bought Renata in 1982. In 1998, SMH changed its name to The Swatch Group. Renata makes cells, batteries, encapsulation technologies, and holders for cells and batteries.

The Company says that it is “one of the three largest manufacturers of coin cells in the world” and that it makes more than a million batteries every day.
